James Richard Hansen was born in 1954 in Denver, Colorado and  lived there until age 20.  After moving to California, he earned a degree in mathematics from California State University, Fresno and a degree in accounting/data processing from Heald College.  He also attended law school at Santa Clara University.  His poems have appeared in various publications, including the Mensa Bulletin and the Sierra Star.  His first book, "Progression", was published in 2001.  He lives in Oakhurst, California, where he writes and works as a math tutor.

JAD are the initials of James' best friend JoAnn Antoinette DeVito.  The seven parts of the book--Father, Mother, Brother, Child, Teacher, Lover, Friend--represent James' roles in their relationship.
